How to use
Crawford's Directory of City Connections 2008 provides key information on Major Companies and the advisers that act for them. Below is a more detailed explanation of the sections contained in Crawford's and the criteria behind their compilation.
Major Companies
These pages provide alphabetical listings for companies in each section including full contact information, company statistics, key board members, advisers to the company and area of business. Companies which have changed sector or name since the previous edition have a cross-reference in the old position directing readers to the new listing. Adviser information aims to reflect those firms principally consulted, but it should be noted that companies may also use other advisers not listed against their entries. Joint advisers are listed alphabetically and not ranked in order of precedence.
Quoted Companies
UK and overseas based companies with sterling denominated ordinary shares and a full listing on the London Stock Exchange. Shareholdings of 5% plus are shown, as well as the percentage of shares held by board members, their families and associates (BFA). Percentages shown may reflect the accumulation of several holdings managed by the same investment institution. The top 500 companies by market capitalisation are indicated by a figure showing their ranking. Companies listed on techMARK are also highlighted.
Quoted Investment & Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs)
UK based Investment and Venture Capital Trust companies with a full listing on the London Stock Exchange. The former satisfies conditions for approval as an Investment Trust as set out in Section 842 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988. The latter, Venture Capital Trusts, are governed by legislation which came into force under the Finance Act 1995 and are designed to promote investment in unquoted UK companies.
AIM Companies
UK and overseas based companies with ordinary shares listed on the Alternative Investment Market. Entries cover the same range of information as for Quoted Companies.
Unquoted Companies
This section commences with a listing of PLUS-quoted companies, OFEX is a facility to allow trading in unquoted company shares. Other UK based companies are then listed, these are either independent or foreign-owned and have an annual turnover greater than £15m. The name of the ultimate holding company, or the company's status is also shown.
Top 500 UK Corporate Pension Schemes
Pension schemes in the public and private sector, cross referenced with the major company entry and the relevant Pension Fund advisers. As well as contact details, figures are given for the market value, net annual income and number of members for the scheme.
Geographical, Industry and Directors Indexes
The geographical index shows all Major Companies sorted into regions of the country. The industry index shows all companies within their industry groupings. The directors index listes either the Chairman or Chief Executive and the Finance Director or Company Secretary for the major companies with a maximum of two per company.
Professional Advisers
Split into coloured sections representing each type of adviser, these pages show the adviser firms acting for the Major Companies listed in Crawford's. Information provided includes contact details, relevant membership associations and client lists compiled from the Major Company listings. The client lists reflect only those companies listed in the Major Company section of Crawford's and should not be taken as representing the complete list of each adviser's clients. For association membership abbreviations turn to the Glossary of Abbreviations. Advisers whose listings are split by the individual regional offices are shown with an applicable client list for each office and are listed in alphabetical order by town.
